Located in the New England region of the United States, Rhode Island is the smallest state in the country with only being 37 miles wide and 48 miles in length. While it may be a small state and only have over 1 million residents, it is 2nd in density in the country with over 1000 residents per square mile. Rhode Island was inducted into the union as the 13th state in 1790, but was the first of the original 13 colonies to declare their independence from British rule. The capital of Rhode Island is Providence and is also the largest city in the state which is located in the eastern portion of the state.
