About Washing Machines

Throw Out The Old Washing Machine…No, Scrap It!

Just replaced your washing machine and not sure what to do with your old one? Scrap it. There is copper in the motor windings and the electric wiring, the stainless steel wash drum and any aluminum that is sometimes used in motors, pulley wheels, internal frames/support brackets, etc. Some scrap yards may accept washing machines as whole units, but with a larger number of them you can make more money by taking them apart for some of the parts mentioned above.

What Types Of Scrap Metals Are In Washing Machines?

Generally we only find two main types of washing machines, there are steel and stainless steel ones. But inside of the washing machines there are all types of materials that you can take apart.

  • Electric Motors- Sometimes aluminum and sometimes copper, you will have to use your file too figure out which is which. But these are used to spin the clothes all over!
  • Stainless Steel– Many times the wash basin where the clothes sit are stainless steel, but make sure you use your magnet to check it out.
  • Light Iron– Most washing machines are made of steel on the outside, just a simple iron…and this is generally worth the least amount of money.
